Tommy Bloomfield |
Tommy Bloomfield was Born on April 4th 1914. Tommy was one of those Veterans who, after being repatriated as a POW, returned to Spain for a second time. After being recaptured Tommy was repatriated for a second time in December 1938.
Tommy began his working life at 11, left school at 14 and laboured until he joined the Black Watch (under-aged) in 1931. His mother took him out of the army because he was only 17 and he was her only means of support. Tommy returned to general labouring and around this time began to get a political education from his mother he also started taking part in demonstrations against means tests and Mosleys 'Black Shirts'. This didn't endear him to the state which usually crushed such dissent with the aid of police baton charges.
In 1936 Tommy was persuaded by his mother to attend a meeting in Thornton, Fife where Willie Gallagher MP was speaking about Spain. After listening to the speeches Tommy volunteered to go.
More information on Tommy can be gained by purchasing the booklet produced by Meg Heggie, see the publications page for more details. Many thanks to Tommys family for allowing me to use some of their memorabilia on this site.
